2nd Grade Weekly Distance Learning Plan
Hello Parents,
Due to school being closed, the second-grade team has come up with a learning plan that you and your child can follow to help keep their brains growing. This learning plan provides different activities in Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies, Science, and Encore. All of these activities are optional, however, we encourage every child to do some or all of the activities listed. Every week, the second-grade team will provide more activities that your child can do. Below is where you can find the 2nd Grade Weekly Distance Learning Plan. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher.

Reading Activity and Reading Strategies

Here is a fun interactive reading game called “Book Bingo”. This game, which was created by our reading specialist, gets your child excited and motivated to read. If your child completes 10 or more activities and brings it back to school with a parent signature, they will be given a prize! Below is a link where you can get more information about “Book Bingo” and where you can get your own “Book Bingo” chart.

As your child is reading, here are some reading strategies that will help your child succeed.

To help your child pronounce or figure out a word, have them use these strategies:

  • Look at the picture
  • Get their mouth ready to make the first sound of the word
  • Sound out the word
  • Reread
  • Skip the word, use context clues to help them figure out what the word may be, go back to the word, and see if it makes sense.
  • Look at the vowels
  • Think of a word that might rhyme with the word they don’t know
  • Chunk it out

Here are some strategies that will help your child gain comprehension skills:

  • Reread the book
  • Use prior knowledge
  • Use context clues
  • Think aloud
  • Summarize the story
  • Think about what the story was mostly about
  • Think about the characters in the story

Using all of these strategies will help your child succeed in reading.
